What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants have been around for a very long time. There are records that state humans have been using dental implants to replace missing teeth since the ancient Egyptians, around 2500 BC.

While the procedures have dramatically improved since the ancient Egyptians (obviously), the core idea has remained. Currently, it is a straightforward two-procedure method that can be divided into a five-step process:

  1. Incision: In the first part of the procedure, a small incision is made on your gums where the implant will be placed.
  2. Cutting and Drilling: After the cut is made, your dentist will drill a little bit into the socket to place the metal implant into the tooth socket. Afterward, a temporary crown will be placed and the incision is stitched and allowed to heal.
  3. Second Session: After you’ve healed (three to six months), you can move on to the second session. Now, the dentist will make a new cut to place a healing cap on top.
  4. Healing Cap Removal: After a few weeks, your doctor can remove the healing cap.
  5. Finishing Steps: When the healing cap is removed, you can now proceed with the abutment placement. Once the abutment is secured, the dentist can proceed with placing the crown.

Crown Point IN Dental Implants

Why It Works

It might seem weird, but this is currently the safest option to replace missing teeth. How does it end up feeling comfortable? Well, the titanium implant actually bonds with the bone of your jaw. This assimilation ends up forming a strong anchor for your new tooth, making the transition feel seamless.

The Benefits

  • Implants are long-lasting solutions.
  • The implant is placed into your jaw, meaning you won’t have to worry about support issues.
  • They function like real teeth. You won’t have to deal with any weird clicking noises and chewing discomfort.

The Drawbacks

  • It takes more than one appointment, so you have to be patient!
  • You need a certain density and volume of bone. If you’re a bit short, another procedure called bone grafting is needed. Thankfully, they have become less painful in recent years!
